  • URGENT – forever home needed due to the shelter closing!

    Frisky 2 400
    From Charlotte Nash‎

SPECIAL HOME NEEDED FRISKY is a striking 4 year old Podenco. He arrived at the charity in a shocking state – skeletal, unwell and petrified. After a lot of love and care he has recovered, but is understandably nervous around new people and living with Leishmaniasis. This is why he needs a special, experienced adopter. He is currently in Spain but can travel to the UK or rest of Europe for the right owner. Please Share!

Sadly Valle Verde Animal Rescue Group is closing at the end of the year, making finding the right person or people for him very urgent! He is a very handsome dog with a lot to say for himself, but starts off quite shy until he knows you. Once he does, he loves nothing more than his head stroked, tummy rubbed and lots of treats. He has no problems with other dogs or coming into contact with children – although we do not advise a household with young children due to his nervous nature.

I thought you would love to see some pix of Esca’s 4 podenco pups. Bev is now having to bottle feed them as Esca could no longer do so when she went back to the vet clinic for surgery on her injured leg. Here’s Bev’s report on their weigh-in.

    Rico 1218 grams + 331
    Vincent 1089 + 270

The pups are feeding well after a bit of a bumpy start they had me worried .. No problem now they wait in line for the bottle mouths open waiting to grab hold.’

  • Podenca Esca – update from Podenco Friends

    Bev Esca vet 400 11 2020
    From Bev Farmer.

‘Earlier in the week I took Esca to our vets to change her dressing and to check her leg. It all looks good, a lot of bruising but little swelling. The holes at the side of her leg are from when she was caught in the trap. They have closed a lot but it is a concern that no infection enters to the bone. So back to our vets next week to review and a new dressing.’

  • 3 Podenco puppies with Podenco Friends – handed over by the hunter

    Bev Constance 400 11 2020
    From Bev at Podenco Friends.

‘The three pups handed over by the hunter Constance, Arthos and Porthos. When they arrived on Thursday they were very withdrawn and the first time I let them out in the paddock given their reaction they had never been outside before . Today they are so much brighter and acting like puppies and eating well.

The two boys I see a problem with their right front leg at the ankle and the position of the leg is little bowed. Its not bothering them it just could be the growth plates so I will refer to my vets..

I doubt these pups got the best food I think they were still feeding off the mum and they are 8 to 10 weeks old .. Lack of exercise stuck in kennel wont have helped. Hopefully it is something with good nutrition and time it will resolve itself.’

  • Podenca Esca with Podenco Friends – a difficult decision on her leg injury

    Bev Esca 400 14 11 2020
Update on Esca from Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.

A few days ago Michael (from Sighthound Underground US) very kindly took Esca to our vets for a review and check her leg. As soon has our vets removed the bandages it was apparent that the bone had completely broken and xrays confirmed this. Eduardo referred her case to a trauma specialist at the veterinary college in Murcia who responded that afternoon.

When Esca arrived my vets and I discussed the options. Do we try to save her leg and go for surgery straight away which has many risks to the fetus . Or save the puppies and delay her surgery. Has the damage to her leg was already done .That she was anemic and low platelet count which is most likely because she is positive for anaplasma, we decided to delay the surgery. This could buy us some time give her a chance to have the pups and today her bloods showed although still anemic its much better and her platelets are back to normal.

  • Sago Palm – poisonous to dogs

    Sago Palm 1 400 11 2020
    From a Veterinary Clinic.

‘Please help us spread the word about this. We are seeing more and more Sago Palm’s for sale as house plants. We were very disappointed to see that the Sago Palm plants in some stores still have no warning label. These plants are very toxic to pets. It takes a very small dose to cause liver failure. Many dogs don’t survive, even with treatment. We took the picture on the left at Home Depot (warning tag). Walmart in the US are also selling them and none of the Sago’s at Walmart had warning tags. These have also been seen at Target and Ikea.

Familiarize yourself with its distinctive appearance, because often they are just called “palm plants” (technically they are not palms, but cycads) or not labeled at all.

Edited to ad: The seeds are the most toxic part of the plant, but these small versions usually are not big enough to produce seeds. However, the entire plant is toxic, so please be careful.’

  • Portuguese Azores – podencos dumped and starving!

    Azores podencos 1 400 11 2020
The Azores belongs to Portugal. We know about the rehalas and maltreatment in Potugal, this has just surfaced!

‘Desperate situation of Podencos in the Azores Islands – Protection of this ancient breed is an important protection of Portugal’s cultural legacy.

Today’s images of S. Miguel Island in the Azores. These are groups of starving podencos left behind like trash. If you drive along that green road you will find many more, desperate. A small group of very kind and dedicated rescuers try their best with little or no support from who should support them.

Could there be a more startling contrast with the beautiful Azores landscapes? Let us remind ourselves this is one of the oldest breeds in the world, undoubtedly part of Portuguese cultural heritage. Is this how these stately beautiful dogs end up?’
