At the end of February I published this story about packs of podencos roaming loose on Ibiza – away from the Tourist hotspots of beaches and hotels. This is an update – sadly not really much further forward. And what is even worse is that no one has come forward to attempt to help them. I know refuges are overflowing with podencos but this situation on Ibiza is tragic!
’14 3 2017 – The situation has changed in the sense that the city council has already hired a company to capture them and take them to Mallorca. The previous time this company came to capture podencos it took about 40, about two years ago. Only 9 were rescued, a person adopted them and looked for homes. The rest were sacrificed, the excuse given was that they were sick, but it was not true. As seen in the first video, which was made a few weeks ago, most are young and in good condition.
We do not know when the company will come to find them, probably before the summer and tourists come. The city council is willing to study other alternatives to remove them. But they can not remain in freedom, they get into farms, they constantly cross the roads, they go in packs and they hunt what they find. In the first youtube video you can see how a labrador dog defends his house from the herd of podencos.
The problem is that on the island, in Ibiza, we do not have the resources to cover so many animals. Podencos and other breeds of abandoned dogs are collected every day.
We need help with shelters, foster homes and adoptions or they will die, we have nowhere to take them.’
(Another report on the situation) We asked for help to fosters, associations, animal shelters to help the desperate situation we are experiencing. Around 60 podencos, hard to know exactly as they don’t stop breeding, in the area of Es Cubells, municipality of San José (Ibiza). The owner was denounced many years ago and the city council used the solution of hiring a private enterprise company Natura Park of Mallorca to catch them and take them for a high amount of money. It was a disaster because they killed them all except five that the Association Friends of Terra s ‘ Esporles was able to rescue and give them a home.
Now the owner of these dogs has passed away and the situation is very desperate, they don’t have food and they’re wandering the fields and roads in search of food, are starving and some are pregnant females.
The City of San Jose wants to hire the same company that took and killed the hounds previously captured and now they’ll do the same. It’s a private company reported many times by associations of the island of Mallorca and PACMA. Let’s work together to help these poor animals to have a foster or adoption and give them the chance to live. To be caught, sterilized, chipped and vaccinated up to date. There are many and here on the island it is impossible to accommodate so many, that’s why we asked for help and collaboration to disseminate.
If you can and want to help send us an email to: assaibibiza@gmail.com
Put your name and phone number and we will contact you promptly.
Complaints against the Centre Natura Parc by Assaib and PACMA have been made separately. We have a record that other animal associations have also reported it. We don’t want these people to take the hounds of Es Cubells, they would end up dead as happened when this company was hired by the city of San Jose
