European Council gives green light for concerted action to protect cats and dogs
At the end of 2010 EU member state representatives voiced their agrrement for joint EU action to protect Europe's cats and dogs through harmonised policy on identification, breeding and trade. They endorsed Council Conclusions on the Welfare of Cats and Dogs put forward by the Belgian Presidency.
The Council's action is a first step forward for more future EU initiatives to protect companion animals and entails that the European Commission will need to take it into account during the drafting process of the second EU stategy for the protection and welfare of animals, which is expected this year.
Europgroup is happy to see Member States acknowledge the need for harmonised measures for the breeding of companion animals, a compatible EU system for the registration and identification of these animals and more extensive education on responsible cat and dog ownership.
