• Spain – how to report a suspected case of animal cruelty

HOW TO REPORT A SUSPECTED CASE OF ANIMAL CRUELTY

    August 2011

There are increasing numbers of animal cruelty cases and people who come across them, often don’t know how to make an official complaint (denuncia) to the police. Seprona, the environmental arm of the Guardia Civil, has given the Costa Animal Society this set of guidelines on what to do.

There are laws to protect animals from cruelty. They cannot complain when they food food or water, no shade from the sun or rain, or have been tied up on a short chain and then forgotten.

But we can speak for them. Please help.

    1. Go to your local Civil Guard bas (Guardia Civil cuartel) Neither the local police nor the National Police handle complaints of this kind.

    2. Take as much written information with you as you can. Names, addresses and a map showing where the animal is will help officers easilly to investigate your complaint. .

    3. If you don’t speak Spanish, get someone who does to go with you otrcontact your local animal welfare society for help or information.

    4. The Guardia Civil will give you a copy of the denuncia, and their copy will be given to Seprona for investigation-

    5. Only Seprona will investigate

    6. With your copy of the denuncia, it can be followed up later.

Thank you to the Costa Animal Society, Nerja, for this information

  • Petite Podenca Pizca from Palencia, Spain, appealing for a forever home

Pizca4 Amigos der Milord 250 This little beauty is called Pizca; she’s a young rough-haired podenca who has been with Amigos de Milord association for over a year. Cristina, of the associations, says ‘she has been here for a year and I have no adopting home for her, and it hurts to think she will be in a cage all her life. She is really small, spayed, vaccinated, loving and good with other dogs – male and female – but not with cats.’

If you can offer this little sweetheart a home, contact Amigos de Milord

  • Sightseeing, Seville – not for this podenca

Hernia 250 08 2011 The first podenca I fostered had been taken to the Jaen perrera by her hunter because she had a hernia the size of a tennis ball. She was rescued and operated on and rehomed in France. Her hernia was nothing like the size of this one.

As you can see, the little podenca is petrified. She was kept in a hut, but luckily rescued and is now with a vet for urgent operation. She will have to go into a residencia afterwards unless a fostger/convalescence home comes forward. And her operation will need paying for. Please contact Immaculate if you wish to help, ask for copies of the vet bills etc. Use a Spanish translator package like Google or Spanish dict.

  • Podenco Denzil – seeking forever – the perfect hound

Denzil 1 250 Another plea for a forever home for Denzil, the perfect podenco. He’s in a foster home, goes to obedience classes and really desperately wants his forever family.

Poor Denzil was found wandering the streets hungry and dehydrated. Galgos del Sol spotted him and set out to rescue him. With the help of The Little Pod foundation we were able to catch him. We could see he had been badly treated and was in terrible condition. Denzil was lucky enough to find a lovely foster home but this has almost worked to his disadvantage.

  • Proyeto Adopta – helping podencos in Southern Spain

Protectora Tarragone 250 starved 08 2011 Here’s news of another group of volunteers in an association, working to save the abandoned dogs of Spain, and especially the podencos. Here’s what they say.

‘Protecto Adopta was born from the passion of a very small group of people who want to offer decent lives to these animals History has confirmed they are the best “non-human” friends that we may have, but however, so many times we see them just in kennels, callejeando or even lying in a ditch. Our intention is to educate the people, as well as trying to get homes to all those dogs who have already suffered the cruelty of the human being.’

  • TARA Podenco Pico – finds his forever home on Gran Canaria

Eva and Pico 190 TARA Gran Canaria 08 2011 Look at this fabulous photo. We all love a happy ending and here is one for Pico, one of the TARA Gran Canaria podencos. Here’s what Brian says.

‘This photo is of The Best Little Dog Shelter in Paradise’s beautiful Eva and her gorgeous new baby boy! Too cute for words!

Eva, The Vigilent Volunteer of the Year 2011, from the beginning was a wonderful foster mother for many of the little canine cuties from The Best Little Dog Shelter, and wisely swore never to fall head over heals in love with any of her wards, to keep her fostering efforts a pristine example of what grand fostering is all about — love and release!

  • No Voice No Choice – 6th August 2011

Nvnc 1250 08 2011 Many thanks to Kim for organising my Galgo News/Podenco Post stand at the above event. The weather kept fine but unfortunately the crowds expected didn’t turn out in huge numbers – possibly some got stuck after a major accident on the M25 kept traffic stationery for 3 hours.

Thanks also to our supporters who turned up with their podencos and galgos to fly the flag for these fabulous hounds. Kim handed out lots of information about my weblogs and some of the rescue associations, so hopefully many more people will now become aware of the plight of the Spanish galgos and podencos.
