• Update on Podenca Carley with Podenco Friends

    Bev Carley vet 400 4 10 2019
From Bev Farmer. ‘Pandora and Carley went in to the vet for their reviews, Pandora for blood tests see how her leishmania is, Carley for a ultrasound and xrays. We were really happy to hear that the lymph gland had not increased in size, no other tumours and her lungs are clear. So for now her chemo treatment seems to be working.

Bruno remarked how well and healthy she looked and we see her at the Finca with lots more energy. We continue with her chemo, she has not had any adverse side effects which is a relief .. and regular ultrasounds and xrays. If no tumours develo, we can look to stop her chemo in a few months.’

You may remember that Carley was rescured with a tiny galgo pup PJ. Sadly PJ became seriously ill and died but Carley goes from strength to strength.

We would like to give a massive shout out to Kindred Spirits Greyhound Adoption. We worked with them to get 9 podencos to the USA a few weeks ago. The rules for getting dogs to the USA have changed and they were a huge help in making this happen.

  • Friend

    FRIEND

When God had made the earth and sky, the flowers and trees,
He then made all the animals and all the birds and bees.
And when His work was finished not one was quite the same
He said, I`ll walk this earth of mine and give each one a name.
And so He travelled land and sea and everywhere He went,
A little creature followed Him, until his strength was spent.
When all were named upon the earth and in the sky and sea,
The little creature said, Dear Lord, there`s not one left for me.
The Father smiled and softly said, I`ve left you to the end.
I`ve turned my own name back to front and
    called you DOG, my friend.

(I like the sentiment in the poem but personally in this world where so many little children and animals suffer – I don’t believe there is a God looking after them. More like their Guardian Angels in the form of volunteers and adopters.!)

  • From Murcia, Spain – to Alaska, USA – Podenca Africa gets her forever home

    Bev Africa to Alaska 400 9 2019
From Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends. A story of tremendous effort to rescue a young podenca from the streets and send her on her way to her forever home in Alaska.

‘Africa ..rescued from the streets, no life for a young puppy. She left at 2am in the morning from the Finca for the start of her journey to Alaska .. then all checked in at Madrid for the first leg of three flights. She will land in JFK airport, have a few days lay over before her adopting mum flies down to collect her…

Thank you to Brian and David from Ibizan Hound Rescue for transporting her and helping with checking her in ..To Michael Owens for making this happen who is flying back with 8 dogs to the US and to everyone that has helped and those who will help once they land in the USA. Thanks to you all these 8 dogs now have a future.’

  • Portugues Podengo x – where are her babies?

Dogs of Portugal Sarah 1 400
    Name: Sarah

    Gender: F

    Breed: x podengo

    Age: d-o-b: beg-2017

    Size: medium (12kg, 45cm)

    Others: dewormed, vaccinated

    Story:

Sarah was found on the street. Her breast were full of milk. She had puppies recently, where are they? One of the volunteers walked with her for hours in the area where she was found hoping to find her puppies. But no puppies…. Most probably her owner killed the puppies and abandoned her far away from home. Very common. She is not a street dog. She is a dog that had a home. And the puppies were probably born there.
    Poor girl.
She is very sweet. A bit shy at the first encounter but she wants to trust and she appreciated cuddles. Very gentle, calm, quiet. Really nice girl…. Hopefully her luck will turn.

  • Walking for the Spanish Hounds in Malaga

    Ann Marie Payne catwalk 400 9 2019
From Ann Marie Payne of Ann’s Canine Care in Malaga.

‘This is to show you that although I live in a hunting area, hunting with galgos and podencos, and the abuse they suffer is not condoned by all people in the town. This photo is of a group of ladies that put on a catwalk show to highlight some of the abandoned dogs found in Campillos, and other dogs needing homes. I am 3rd from the left with Mattei, and Suerte is in the centre. Both have gone on to find loving and forever homes.

So please when you see graphic photos of abused dogs in Spain please take into account that many, many individual Spanish people, charities and groups are trying to help the situation, and they go unnoticed.

Thank you Ann and the dogs

  • Podenca Pearl – terrified podenca now safe – what has she suffered?!

    Ann Pearl 400 9 2019
From Ann at Nnn’s Canine Care in Malaga.

‘It’s been a busy day and this evening we have another little podenco in our care. I’ve changed her name to Pearl as it is very similar in English and Spanish. And she is a little pearl, she’s very frightened, and apparently an escape artist. But for now let’s see what tomorrow brings. Pearl was rescued by It’s been a busy day and this evening we have another little podenco in our care. I’ve changed her name to Pearl as it is very similar in English and Spanish. And she is a little pearl, she’s very frightened, and apparently an escape artist. But for now let’s see what tomorrow brings. Pearl was rescued by Sos Peludos Comarca Guadalteba Sospcg from a life threatening situation, but had nowhere for her to go.

First thing to do is have her blood tested, and then prepared for adoption. At the moment I’ve no idea how long it will take to turn her around to a confident young lady, but we will do our best.

Please join our teaming group, we need your support to carry on helping these poor dogs. It’s just a small donation of 1 euro a month. https://www.teaming.net/ann-scaninecare…

  • Euthanasia – when is the right time?

    Carmela July 2019 400
Regular readers will know that occasionally I publish links to article in the Whole Dog Journal, when I find the subject matter interesting or thought provoking. Recently a piece came in on the subject of euthanazie – when is the right time and as my galga Carmela has started to suffer from dementia, I read up some more. Links to a couple of articles are below.

It is over 10 years since Carmela came into my life, during one of my many trips into Spain with L’Europe des Levriers to bring back podencos and galgos for homing in France. She had been rescued from a perrera and showed many signs of having been badly treated by her galguero, mostly in mental fear. She gradually gained in confidence living alongside my outgoing very friendly galga Sahara – who sadly was pts when riddled with cancer. No longer living in the shadow of Sahara, Carmela became a lively happy galga, a joy to behold.

  • Regalgos, Perrigalgos, the outcasts of Spain

    Scooby perrigalgos 400 1 8 2019
‘The outcasts of the outcasts in the world of hunting – They call them Regalgos in Andalusia and
    Perrigalgos in Castilla.

They are mongrels whose father or mother is a galgo and they are the ones no one notices. Galgos are easy to place, as more and more people realise what wonderful companions they can be in family. Podencos, although still problematic to place, usually have a size that facilitates their adoption.

But what about this new category of mix breeds?
