I’ve been writing about and publicising the plight of the podencos for many years – alongside my work for the galgos. Here’s an article I wrote about the different types of podenco. Unlike the galgo of which there is only smooth haired and rough haired, the podenco varies from the Enano and Maneto which are small like a dachshund up to the large Campanero which is shaggy and used to hunt wild boar. A podenco to suit every home!

Hind leg dew claws – what to do about them
One of the podencos recently rescued from Valencia perrera is Ray, a rough-haired boy who is now in foster with Bev Farmer. He was recently castrated and, at the same time, his rear dew claws removed.
I’ve lived with all types of dogs all my life and been in involved in the rescue of a few hundred, especially from Spain, and I’ve not come across a dog with rear dew claws. So I asked Bev about it and also found this information on the Internet.

Valencia Podenco Andaluz puppy, rescued injured & starving – can you take him into your heart and home?
Look at this cute little podenco, less than a year old, found wandering through a ravine with a broken tail and a femur fracture of a hind leg. The leg hung loose, like a rag doll’s leg. He was a skeleton, totally malnourished, with a sore eye and bore injuries on his nose and neck. He’s been called Aradio by his saviours.
The vet says Aradio has wandered for weeks with his leg dangling, possibly hit by a car. Understandably he was very scared of being caught but couldn’t run far with his injured leg.
