  • Sad tale of a Podenco Stray lost in the campo

Jane catching abandoned podenco 400 5 11 2016This year seems to be the year of abandoned podencos for Pepis Dog Refuge. Yet another stray on the lane to the refuge, Jane Brian working hard to catch him. Here’s another of Alan Brian’s terrific moving poems inspired by this little hound.

    Podenco stray
by Alan Brian of Pepis Dog Refuge

Although you can see my picture I normally hide away,
It seems thats how things have to be as im just another stray.
I’ve lost my home and family, how can this be right,
Now I have to fend for myself and sleep under the stars at night.
I sleep here on the wasteland to rest my weary head
The dirt and rubbish is all I have to make a comfy bed.
I have no trust in humans, as this picture clearly shows,
But this lady comes and talks to me then feeds me before she goes.
I don’t know what will become of me as I did trust once before,
Maybe I will never trust again, I really can’t be sure.

  • Introducing George – a ‘child’ of the olive groves

George's arrival at 8 months 250 Dec 2012The introductory story to George was included in an email from Yvonne Warwick. So I asked her to write the full story of how he came to work his way into her heart and home.

    The original message.
This is my beautiful George! He arrived on our land at around 8 months old. We’d seen him in the village and on our land in the mountains with his parents and two sisters. We believe that the DaddyDog told him to go off
and seek his fortune when he got to 6 months. He came to us when we were picking our olives…skinny and starving with a wound on his nose.

We thought long (OK, 3 days!) about what to do…in the meantime he made up his mind that he was staying. Very brave of him to come so close to us….it was meant to be! He is 3 and a bit now and a fantastic dog. Luckily he wasn’t taken as a pup by a hunter. His feral upbringing has meant he has lovely manners and is the sweetest dog ever, though his recall skills could do with improvement!

  • 7 dogs abandoned in an olive grove in Jaen – urgent help needed

Jaen podenco 250 1 8 2012This appeal just in from a volunteer in Jaen, about 7 dogs abandoned in an olive grove, one of them a podenco. Here’s what she says, which I think illustrates the frustration and despair sometimes felt by the volunteers who feel they are battling against the odds so much of the time.

‘Subject: Urgent dogs abandoned in an olive grove in BAILÉN (JAÉN)!!!
    Date: Thu, 23 Aug 2012 15: 22:

Yesterday came a man to tell me that in an olive grove on the outskirts of Bailen, were 7 abandoned dogs. when I arrived I found a beagle, bodeguero family including 2 pups and podenco, and a xbreed. There was also a black galgo but it was dead.

These dogs are in a very dangerous area, near a Gypsy neighborhood.

I need the help of protectoras and individuals to save the lives of these dogs.
