  • The Story of Izzy – happy ending for a failed podenco huntress

Izzy 3 170Michelle tells the story of how she came to offer a forever home to podenca Izzy.

‘It started with a photo. Not a great nor clear photo, but poignant and heart-breakingnever the less. It was of a tiny female Andalusian hound chained to a wall in a filthy Spanish cellar. No windows, no bed, just damp concrete to sleep on and a rusty dirt encrusted water bowl that was bigger than the dog.

The reason – she wasn’t good at hunting, and like many Spanish hounds in her position, she was thus regarded as trash. The luckier ones are rescued, but many are abandoned, hanged, burned alive, thrown down wells, or stabbed to death. She needed someone to offer her a home, otherwise she would most likely have suffered one of these fates.

  • Introducing George – a ‘child’ of the olive groves

George's arrival at 8 months 250 Dec 2012The introductory story to George was included in an email from Yvonne Warwick. So I asked her to write the full story of how he came to work his way into her heart and home.

    The original message.
This is my beautiful George! He arrived on our land at around 8 months old. We’d seen him in the village and on our land in the mountains with his parents and two sisters. We believe that the DaddyDog told him to go off
and seek his fortune when he got to 6 months. He came to us when we were picking our olives…skinny and starving with a wound on his nose.

We thought long (OK, 3 days!) about what to do…in the meantime he made up his mind that he was staying. Very brave of him to come so close to us….it was meant to be! He is 3 and a bit now and a fantastic dog. Luckily he wasn’t taken as a pup by a hunter. His feral upbringing has meant he has lovely manners and is the sweetest dog ever, though his recall skills could do with improvement!

  • Podencos for adoption

There are dozens of podencos spending months and longer in refuges, shelters and foster homes. Please remember them if you would like to offer one a forever home. Here’s a list of associations to contact, by country, if you can help.

And for every podenco homed from a refuge, the association can rescue one from a perrera. It’s heartbreaking how many podencos are dumped in perreras by the hunters – especially on CESE which means ‘fast track to killing’! And if a perrera is full, podencos are the first dogs to be killed to make room for incomers!

  • Molly, Foxy Lady, Dave and Tilly – Podenco pals in the UK

Dawn Richardson 4 pods 250 6 2014Another delightful rehoming story, this time from Dawn Richardson, about her 4 podencos. She regularly takes them to dog shows where they are winning plenty of rosettes.

‘I came across Molly our 1st Podenco cross in January 2013 by accident. A friend had invited me to a facebook site called Costa Blanca Dog Homing as she knew we were looking for a dog after losing ours 7 years earlier. I spotted Molly on the site when I saw her photo from Little Pods. Lots of emails later and we reserved Molly pending a home check. The nice lady arrived and gave me lots of info regarding Pods as I never knew or heard about them before. Molly arrived with us in May 2013, and tiny, nervous little girl, but it was love at first sight. Molly soon became more happy & confident but seemed a little lonely.

  • Podenco Passe – always passed over – desperately needs foster and forever

Passe5_250This is an appeal for a foster or, even better, a forever home for Podenco Passe in Fuengirola, Spain. Maybe his name doesn’t help, he is ‘passed’ over in favour of other dogs in the shelter. Here’s his story.

He is in a kennel in Fuengarola, Costa Del Sol, Spain. Stacey from 4forpaws adoption took him in as he was being attacked by a Boxer Dog and got badly injured. But that was over 2 years ago and he has been in the kennel now ever since then. He is a lovely looking dog.

  • Podenco Aron – happily rehomed

Aron 2 Laura Kate Stone 250Laura Kate Stone adopted Aron, a podenco orito. Here she tells his story.

‘Aron was a stray, taken to a pound in Cuenca. The pound was too many dogs over the limit and so Aron was on the destroy list. Tina a lady on holiday there from Sweden who has adopted many spanish dogs sponsered Aron into boarding, and was sorted out by the amazing Beverley Farmer.

I was looking for a sighthound as I had always wanted one, to go with our Collie, and ended up on a site advertising dogs for various rescues. Aron had been associated with SOS Animals UK and that is where I saw him.
