  • L’Europe des Levriers – saving the galgos and podencos of Albacete perrera

Bea Irene Albacete rescue 250 10 2011L’Europe des Levriers is the French association from whom I adopted my galgas and with whom I have also travelled to Spain to help with rescues. At the beginning of October (when I was in the UK and unable to help) a team travelled to Spain to bring back 30 galgos and podencos from the perrera at Albacete. Most of the dogs had been there for over a year. And you will be impressed by the excellent conditions at this particular perrera, would that all of them achieved this standard.

Beatrice, President of the association, tells the tale, and you can see a film of the rescue here.

‘Alarmed by the incessant fighting of male dogs who were missing space in the crowded perrera of Albacete, EDL has decided to take out ALL galgos and podencos from there. 30 dogs (50% of them Podencos) were brought to France at the beginning of October, to host families. These pictures do not reflect the expression and beauty: Yuma, Sira, Yiyo, Chicote, Queco, Anko, Nevo, Zuzo, Kronos, Claudia, Aysha, Violetta, Belinda, Tiva, Gala, Mano for galgos! Half of them have already been adopted.

  • Podenca Katy – latest news and video

You probably remember podenca Katy, who had cataracts in both eyes. Silvia’s vet has operated but sadly the eye inside was malformed and the specialist could do nothing. Katy is happy and doing well, you can see a video on the website. Well done to Galgo Connection Spain and everyone involved in helping this beautiful podenca.

  • Ibizan hound Pobe/Bob needs a forever family – L’Europe des Levriers appeal

Bob Pobe 250 EDL 10 2011This stunning Podenco Ibicenco is Pobe/Bob. He was rescued from Albacete killing station last year, and has been waiting for his forever home since then, nearly a year! He is two years old, still a bit nervous but will blossom into a confident boy in a forever home. He needs a secure garden with a high fence/wall (podencos can jump) and another canine companion to play with. He’s also good with cats. He is microchipped, vaccinated, free from diseases, castrated. If you can offer this fabulous hound his forever family, contact L’Europe des Levriers. Bea and Katia both speak good English.

  • Podenca Andaluz Bebe – a hard day playing on the beach!

Bebe asleep 190A couple of weeks ago we took our latest foster galgo to the UK to his forever home. After 15 months with foster dogs, we are back to our own 4 permanent residents. So we decided to take them to the beach at the weekend. Les Conches is on the west coast of France, just above the port of La Rochelle. There is little habitation and miles and miles of sandy beach. It was a glorious day, wall-to-wall blue skies and the dogs loved it. The galgas ran free for the first time, although we didn’t risk letting little Podenca Andaluz Bebe off the long lead. But she paddled and jumped waves and enjoyed herself just as much as the others.

As Bebe is such a little bundle of energy (she is a miniature Podenca Andaluz), it’s not very often that she is completely tired out – but a day at the beach proved more than enough – as you can see from the photo of her fast asleep on the sofa next to me!

  • Podenca Canario Mami – saved from starvation on Gran Canaria

Mami 1 Peter Pod 250 09 2011 It’s easy to overlook that the popular holiday desinations of Ibiza and the Canary Islands are also part of Spain. Whilst Ibiza is quite close to the mainland, the Canary Islands are down in the Atlantic off the coast of West Africa. Life on these islands is hard for the animals – many used by tourists – whilst hundreds of others are used for hunting. Luckily there are rescue associations picking up the pieces, but the only hope of a life for an animal outside an animal shelter or refuge is to be adopted on mainland Europe.

This is the story of Mami, a Podenco Canario, whose mouth was taped up before she was dumped in the mountains on Gran Canaria, abandoned to a slow and painful death.
