In the middle of October a young podenco was spotted running terrified around a highway in Badajoz with a very serious injury to his mouth – in short, the whole of his lower jaw was missing! He was rushed to the veterinary hospital for emergency treatment. Below you will see photos – not all pleasant – but rest assured Spirit, as the podenco has been named – is fighting to survive and eventually the surgeons will rebuild a lower jaw for him. So far vet fees paid are 800 euros but obviously the repair and rehabilitation of Spirit will cost considerably more. If you wish to make a donation, paypal refugiolacandela@gmail.com. It’s a long time since I left.
The truth is that I was never happy, always treated me badly.
I lived in a place surrounded and with a small roof to get out of the cold and the rain.
I’m just out to hunt, until one day they stopped doing it.
I don’t run long enough for that person to whom I belonged.
A few days later they took me in the middle of the field with another dog like me and they cut us loose.
I didn’t know what to do, whether to run, or wait until my master gave me an order.
I was disoriented.
I’ve never lived through a similar situation. -

Podencos for adoption
There are dozens of podencos spending months and longer in refuges, shelters and foster homes. Please remember them if you would like to offer one a forever home. Here’s a list of associations to contact, by country, if you can help.
And for every podenco homed from a refuge, the association can rescue one from a perrera. It’s heartbreaking how many podencos are dumped in perreras by the hunters – especially on CESE which means ‘fast track to killing’! And if a perrera is full, podencos are the first dogs to be killed to make room for incomers!

Molly, Foxy Lady, Dave and Tilly – Podenco pals in the UK
Another delightful rehoming story, this time from Dawn Richardson, about her 4 podencos. She regularly takes them to dog shows where they are winning plenty of rosettes.
‘I came across Molly our 1st Podenco cross in January 2013 by accident. A friend had invited me to a facebook site called Costa Blanca Dog Homing as she knew we were looking for a dog after losing ours 7 years earlier. I spotted Molly on the site when I saw her photo from Little Pods. Lots of emails later and we reserved Molly pending a home check. The nice lady arrived and gave me lots of info regarding Pods as I never knew or heard about them before. Molly arrived with us in May 2013, and tiny, nervous little girl, but it was love at first sight. Molly soon became more happy & confident but seemed a little lonely.

4th Fun Dog Show at St Pardoux, Sunday 8th September 2013
Here are some of the pix from my 4th Fun Dog Show fundraiser held on 8th September 2013. You’ll see pix of Most Handsome Male, Best Veteran, Best Crossbreed, Best Brace, Adult and Junior Handler, and all the first placed winners forward for Best in Show. Thank you to my lovely French judge Mireille Poupard, President of Agility Club de Terves and my great steward Rachel Moon – there’s no one better at getting everyone in the right place at the right time! I have a wonderful team of volunteers helping me, including MOH David. Without their support, the event would not happen – proceeds go to a couple of small refuges in Spain.
