In the middle of October a young podenco was spotted running terrified around a highway in Badajoz with a very serious injury to his mouth – in short, the whole of his lower jaw was missing! He was rushed to the veterinary hospital for emergency treatment. Below you will see photos – not all pleasant – but rest assured Spirit, as the podenco has been named – is fighting to survive and eventually the surgeons will rebuild a lower jaw for him. Podenco Maneto Bruno – urgently needs a forever home
This beautiful little boy is Bruno, a young Podenco Maneto found abandoned. He’s only 8-9 months old, certainly too young to be wandering the world on his own! The Maneto is a small type, similar to a dacshund in size, so suitable for smaller homes. He’s in southern Spain near Chiclana. Please contact Karen Dunn about him. In the last week they have taken in 6 abandoned dogs, they are overrun, so let’s find Bruno a forever home as soon as possible.

Cheap accommodation in Spain
There’s room in the trashbin … from whence this little soul was rescued! News from Little Pod Asssociation in Murcia. Just a tiny baby podenca girl, 50 days old and thrown in a bin like trash!!! She sustained some horrific injuries and her front leg has already been amputated. She has been named Sara. She is now safe with LPA and already has offers of a forever home, when she is recovered enough.

Pluto has had a very bad time. He was a street dog in Rute for over a year and no one was able to get near enough to him to catch him. It was unfortunately an accident he had with a car, that enabled GPAR to rescue him, take him to the vet for treatment and then to the refuge where he has been since Feb this year.
The accident caused injury to his right paw which is now sightly deformed but he can walk on it although he will need to have another operation and he is waiting to have this.

Desperate help needed for a podenco
A friend of mine has just rescued a podenco in terrible condition…two boys helped her catch him. She is in an area with a lot of hunters and gitanos. She suffers from ill health and has not the means to pay for the vet treatment he needs. So we desperately need an association to take him on. She is in southern Spain. Here’s what she says about him.
1/12/2014 – ‘Walking through the square I saw a very, very thin podenco with one front leg held up and dangling, searching under and around the bins. I asked two little boys to watch him, rushed into the shop which luckily is on the square, grabbed a packet of frankfurters for 2€ and rushed out again. After he’d eaten several, he hopped off, but we followed him and one of the little boys (Gitanos – lots here and not crueller to animals than anyone else) managed to go up to him and gently stroke his head and hold him, while I tied my scarf round his neck.

Jaen, Spain – House of Horror
These podencos were discovered in a finca – chained to the wall so they could barely even lie down – in filth, starving…a denuncia has been made and authorities contacted to help them. A couple were rescued but then the volunteers were accused of trespassing! A petition has been raised to demand the authorities take action against the owner and save the dogs. The Baranco podenco puppies – beating the bastard who tried to kill them!
This is a road and a ravine in Spain. on 7th September Penelope Guest, who lives nearby, heard some faint cries. She tells the story.
‘Well, it’s started…the mass killing of podencos. Yesterday I could hear tiny helps, coming from the mountain behind me. John and I climbed up as far as we could, and could see a bag hup higher. John was able to clibe all the way up, and inside the bag were seven newly born podenco puppies. Unable to bring them back up, I called a friend to bring some ropes and a pulley and we were able to bring John and the half-dead pups up.

Adaana – please help the ‘invisible’ podencos find forever homes
Appeal from Adaana – if their rescued podencos don’t soon find homes, they can’t help the others already on the street needing taking to safety. Here’s what they say.
‘We’re getting near February, and we know that with the end of the hunting season we’ll suffer a new wave of “hunting tools” dropped everywhere, while those which we already rescued remain invisible, without finding a home.

We are already receiving requests for help for other podencos who, like them, have been used and discarded, but we can’t do more, especially if our rescued don’t achieve to find their new homes.

Amber was seen by a college of us with her owners and a lot of other podencos, hunting in a forbidden area. She approached them to tell them they shouldn’t be hunting there and they left. Amber caught her eye, because she seemed so young and clumsy… the next day she saw Amber on her own, and the next, … she was scared, but as the days went passed she got more confident and now she’s understood that there’s nothing to be scared about, and she’s a wonderful dog.
Miga was during nearly a month following in the distance a girl every time she walked her dog, she looked skinny and harmed. Between this person and a few neighbors they kept feeding her and trying to catch her, and at last, they achieved to catch her and they took her to the vet: she had a peculiar wound in her mouth, and the vet said it’s quite usual in the area, that hunters drop them with their mouth shut so that they aren’t able to hunt, but she was lucky to manage to get rid of it. Also, she was pregnant (we’ve sterilized her).
Though she walks perfectly on the leash and she accepts manipulation, she’s still quite scared, and she prefers to remain in the distance if possible.
