  • TheKennelKlub and Podenco Friends – saving the Lanzarote podencos

Bev Sarifa Lanzarote 400 10 2016Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends is now helping Laura Johnson of TheKennelKlub with the Lanzarote podencos. Here’s what Bev writes.

‘A picture that says a thousand words……. So many podencos are subjected to such a harsh life they are never loved or treated with kindness like we do with out own dogs. They don’t get to sleep on a sofa o,r a comfy bed, if they are lucky they are are held in cages where they can sleep on the ground. Many don’t even get this, they are restrained on chains 24 hours 7 days a week only released when taken out on a hunt. Then they are abandoned if sick or old, for its much cheaper to get a pup or younger one, than pay for veterinary treatment.

The Podenco face two battles, a life of subjugation and then a lack of adoptions for they are not viewed suitable as a family pet, the odds are really stacked against them. On the Island of Lanzarote Podencos have been discovered in the most deplorable conditions held in holes in the ground with no natural light, left there for days with stale water and no food. This is 2016 and why this is allowed to continue is beyond me, and with the power of social media today, few people know about the breed outside Spain.

I can not imagine what goes through their minds when they are handed into a perrera, thrown into cages or corrals with other dogs they have never encountered before. Exposed to other dogs that may carry sickness or disease, fights break out over food for they are fed in hoppers, the strongest survive so many others never eat. It is without doubt a very stressful situation for them. These could be their final days on this earth, for once the perreras are full they have no choice but to euthanise and Podencos are at high risk due to the lack of potential adoptions.

This brown & white boy is Goldie, he is a Podenco cross, also rescued from the pound. He has been in a kennel since the age of 3 months old so has missed out on the usual puppy training. He is very friendly and very intelligent but does need some guidance and some one with the time to spend with him. He is good with most other dogs and children. He is a beautiful looking boy. • TheKennelKlub, Lanzarote, Canary Islands – saving Angelique

Kennel Klub Tara 2 250‘You think you have seen it all and then a dog like this arrives and breaks your heart all over again. Thank you to the kind person who didn’t just drive on past her. She has sustained serious trauma to the head, the most serious injury of which is a fractured skull. The injuries have happened a few days ago and the wounds are infected and there were maggots in them. The vet has cleaned up the wounds and administered pain killers, anti-inflammatory, antibiotics and she does have an IV to keep her hydrated. Obviously she will loose both of her eyes. We will see how she gets on over night.

  • Puerto Mogan, Canary Islands…what the tourists don’t see

Hundreds of thousands of people flock to the Canary Islands on holiday, whether for summer sun or to escape the cold winters of the UK and Europe. • SARA Protectora, Lanzarote – saving dogs

SARA Protectora clavel 170 9 2013The Canary Island podencos have a very hard life and here’s just one example. Meet Clavel, or Carnation in English. Here is what SARA say.

Clavel is the name we have given to this little male podenco, which the owner brought to our premises on the order of Seprona, who went to the house to process the complaint. They ordered that the dog be taken to our kennels to be treated and of course to be found a new home. The owner knew that the eye had been bad for a long time and that as of course it hadn’t been treated, the eye just exploded, with all the suffering that entails.

It was necessary to remove the eye and now he is recuperating from the operation.

Thank you to Seprona for taking action for this little dog and bringing him to us so that he can be treated.

If you would like to offer Clavel a loving forever home, contact SARA Protectora.
