Pro-Setter Spain are co-ordinating the rescue, Galgos del Sol in Murcia, along with three other associations, have already taken out 14 dogs. Watch the video – it shows the truth of how thousands of these dogs are kept in rural areas by the Spanish hunters and gitanos. See photos of one rescue.

This year is the worst year yet for the Spanish hunting dogs.

  • Happy rehomings for some lucky podencos

Thank you to the Little Pod Fondation and Animal Welfare Support Murcia for organising to collect the little Seville podenca puppy and find her a forever home. Iggy Podenco is being adopted by an English couple also in Murcia (thanks to AWSM) and an English family have applied and are currently being approved to adopt Bella. And Luna is the one-eyed podenca with Galgos del Sol, who flew to the US with a galgo companion on 11/1/2012.

But there are dozens more needing your support and help, and the volunteers and associations are very grateful for whatever you can do, whether it is donations, fostering, adopting.

  • Podenco Caramello – waiting in Murcia for his forever family

Caramello_ears_up 190 Tina 11 2011Look at this fabulous podenco, and no one has asked for him! He’s hoping he might have a forever home for his Christmas present. Here’s his story from Tina at Galgos del Sol.

Caramello, originally called Naranja, was living rough and very underweight. Local residents were feeding him until we could get to him. Although fairly easy to catch, getting him into the car to take to the vets was a different matter, he was so frightened.

  • Podenco Denzil – seeking forever – the perfect hound

Denzil 1 250 Another plea for a forever home for Denzil, the perfect podenco. He’s in a foster home, goes to obedience classes and really desperately wants his forever family.

Poor Denzil was found wandering the streets hungry and dehydrated. Galgos del Sol spotted him and set out to rescue him. With the help of The Little Pod foundation we were able to catch him. We could see he had been badly treated and was in terrible condition. Denzil was lucky enough to find a lovely foster home but this has almost worked to his disadvantage.

  • Podenco x Frank needs veterinary care – please donate

Tina Frank 250 06 2011 As with many small refuges, Galgos del Sol struggles for funding to pay for veterinary care and feed for their galgos and podencos. This is one of them, Frank, a podenco x found running up a motorway, starving and frightened. He is approx 1yrs old and fully vaccined and castrated. At present he is too thin. His bloods are negative for leishmania, erlichia and filaria. Frank has a serious food allergy which causes extreme diarrhoea, his pancreas has tested ok and he needs a special food diet. He’s now been taken into the vet clinic for further tests, including an endoscopy.

This is going to cost 500 euros, a lot of money, if you can donate towards the cost of Frank’s vet fees, you will make a big difference to the life of this young dog. At present we are working with a vet to find a diet that suits him.

  • Moxie May, a podenca with a wonderful forever home

Moxie May 1 Meryl Marsh 04 2010 250 For a change, a lovely story about Moxie May, told by her forever Mom Meryl Marsh.

‘I am from the U.S. and live most of the year in Belgium because my boyfriend works here. Last spring I started researching adoption agencies on the internet and learned that there are several in Belgium that place dogs from Spain, this lead to me learning about what a sad, desperate situation many dogs face in Spain. Before that, I had no idea.

Every country has it’s issues with animal cruelty, but I was really shocked to learn how bad Spain is with the hunting practices and such. This was also the first time I had ever seen a Podenco. I fell in love with their athletic build and of course the big ears. I was searching for a dog that would be a running companion for me and maybe provide a little protection when I am out by myself on a trail (although Moxie ended up being a relatively small podenco.)

  • 25th March 2011 – join the march against animal cruelty

On www.noalmaltratoanimal.org  you can read or see about a big manifestation through whole Spain on the 25th of March against mistreating of animals and longer sentences in prison for people who are guilty of this.

There is a comprehensive list of all the major cities and towns where a march is taking place, including time and place to meet.  Please attend and get as many of your friends, supporters, neighbours etc. to take part, if you live in Spain or the Canary and Balearic Islands.  They ask for 80,000 people, I'm sure there could be many more.

UPDATE    28/03/2011 – people turned out in their thousands, it was very successful.  When I get more news, I'll post more.
