  • Our 12 year old podenca Coco is such a gem. She is sweet and great with other dogs. Towards people she can be a bit shy. Who would like to give this oldie a chance? After 12 years of hunting and having puppies, her last years should be spend on someone’s sofa. She has now gained weight and will be sterilised soon.

    Her suitcases are packed in the hope someone will give this sweet podenca a comfy rest of life.

  • Skin Lesions and Cancer in Dogs

    As a family, we have lost 5 dogs, 1 horse and l cat to different types of cancer.  Lymphoma reared itself as a lump on a galgo’s neck, which had spread.  A sarcoma started bleeding under my horse’s tail.  Cancer developed in my cat’s mouth.  2 more galgos had stomach tumours.

  • URGENT APPEAL for scalibor collars

    Animal lovers the summer months are approaching and it’s very important to protect dogs from the sandfly that causes Leishmaniosis. Every year, unfortunately, too many dogs adopted from Spain die abroad due to ignorance, poor information, wrong diagnosis, not the right treatment… So preventing infection with the Leishmania parasite is very important. Contrary to what is often said, Leishmaniosis cannot be cured, in other words your dog will have it for the rest of his or her life. Fortunately, with proper treatment and medication, the infection can be kept under control. Regular blood tests are also recommended, that way your four-legged friend can also grow old like other dogs. We protect dogs during and before the summer months with a collar combined with a pippet. A vaccination is also possible, it’s quite expensive and studies have currently not been able to show whether this vaccination gives sufficient security. (more…)

  • SEPRONA rescue 11 abandoned Podencos from a semi-ruined house

    The Civil Guard has rescued eleven pods abandoned by their owner after an alert of citizen collaboration.
    The animals were locked up in a semi-ruined house, in severe unhealthy conditions and without food. The rescue was carried out by SEPRONA with the support of veterinarians from the Board of Castile and Leon.
    The dogs have been moved to a suitable facility at the Burgos Municipality – responsible for their custody from now on – where they receive the necessary care until their final adoption.

  • Sad reality of life for an abandoned podenco in Spain

    From Silvia Mateos to the Policia Local de Bejar (your duty is to protect her, and you have left her alone…. You should be suspended from work and pay.

    Yesterday was a shitty day….. sadness, anger, helplessness and rage…. The incompetence and negligence of the municipal councils and municipal security forces spoils crime and costs the lives of living beings…. the podenco in the photo is DEAD.

    On Friday on New Year’s Day in the middle of the night we get the notice of this dog hit near the roundabout of Palomares, the person who saw it gave notice to the Local Police of Bejar that at first they impersonated themselves and said they would warn the Civil Guard…. no further news…

    At 00:40h I communicate with the Local Police of Bejar to ask about her and her situation to be able to help her…… They inform me that the dog is collected in some municipal offices in Béjar and that the next day they will notify the collection service of the Deputation….. i wonder how it is…. his literal response…. “The dog seems to have a major injury on a hind leg, externally she doesn’t have much blood but she’s very decayed, I don’t know she sees it well”.  I insist again if they let us help her and her answer is that they have to follow the protocol , (more…)

  • Urgent forever homes needed for two podenco puppies with APASA

    Pride%20&%20Prejudice 300These two adorable podencos puppies were thrown over the fence of the APASA dog pound. Jacky Hazeleger, their foster mom, tells the story.

    ‘Poor Pride and Prejudice! These 2 lovely podenco puppies were thrown over the fence of our dog pound in the night. Thank God that they ended up in a very good pack. If they have been thrown into a different pack, they might have been killed.

  • Podenca Canela, from the streets of Spain to a forever family

  • Scooby Auction 15th May – Donations urgently needed

    Scooby appeal banner 200 Dear friends,

    It is hard to believe that this year will be our 3rd Scooby North America Auction. Actually, we are having 2 auctions this year. One in June and another in December. In the past two years, with your help we have raised enough money to help install a much-needed tile floor in the Hospital and Surgery Center and build numerous brick shelters in the paddocks at the Scooby Animal Refuge in Medina del Campo, Spain.

    This year we are hoping that with your generosity we can build a much needed puppy house. The puppy house will be fully insulated, including the floor. There will be whelping boxes for mom and her pups and a doggy door for the mothers to use the outside areas before the puppies are ready. There will also be room for them to play and romp around and of course beds for them to sleep without always having to be under foot.
