Eight dogs and M.E. – blog by Fiona Nicholson

Cirneco dell’Etna – from Sicily to Russia
Whilst I do not support breeding podencos, here is a lovely story about the small Cirneco Dell’Etna podencos from Sicily, which are now making a name for themselves in Russia. Unlike the Andaluz, Ibicenco and Canario especially – of which there is massive over-breeding, abandonment and killing, the Cirneco dell’Etna is not well known. So Ekaterina Klimova tells her story.
I Ekaterina Klimova, have been studying and breeding Cirneco Dell’Etna for more than five years. The first woman introduced one to the city of St. Petersburg, imported from Sicily. Now in my kennel Mia Santo’s three bitches Cirneco. Two females are involved in the breeding program, I want to receive and recover the ancient, beautiful unique type Cirneco Dell’Etna.

Podenco Friends – Bev Farmer tells her story
It’s 10 years since Bev Farmer first met Tilly and so began her journey into the world of the podencos – life was never to be the same! Bev tells her story.
10 years ago this month I encountered my very first Podenco. We had suddenly lost one of our dogs and called into a local shelter. Tilly was curled up in ball shivering and looking so vulnerable, so yes we will have her. She had been discovered in a large refuse bin covered in rubbish with one of her front legs badly broken.
So, having absolutely no idea what a “Podenco” was, we took her home.

I receive dozens of photos each week of galgos and podencos needing help; the ones which really break my heart are the puppies and injured dogs. This photo was the first one I receive of a puppy in a perrera, due to be killed. I appealed to Tina at Galgos del Sol, the little pup was saved from Jerez perrera in January 2011, and called Angela after her foster mom. Sadly little Angela fell sick of parvo disease and died the following month. But her legacy lives on in Little Pod Foundation and Angela tells the story of their work and why they do what they do.

When we moved to Spain I decided the time was right and fate must have heard me say so, because we spotted an advert in our local paper for podenco puppies available mid January (2009), just in time for my birthday!
