  • Update on Podenco Spirit, with Refugio Candela

    Spirit 400 2 4 2019
    Update 2 4 2019

‘We are with Spirit in Lepanto Veterinary Center, Veterinary Traumatology

For weeks we have observed that the mucosal tissues that covered the prosthesis implanted at Valencia Sur Veterinary Hospital were retracting, leaving the irons more and more visible. This situation is quite uncomfortable for him: so we have to look for an immediate solution.

Both veterinary teams are in contact and we all have our eyes, ears and hearts wide open.

We are going to look for the best solution for him: above all so that he does not lose his quality of life, so that he does not have to go back to eating pureed food… so that he can continue to be a happy dog.

Wish us all the luck that this blonde with honey eyes deserves …’

  • PACMA demand hunting in Castille y Leon be stopped

    Spanish hunters Castilla y Leon 400 3 2019
From the CREL newsletter of March 13, 2019

The Spanish animalist party (PACMA) claims the protection of wildlife and takes legal action.

The Hunting Act in Castilla y León (Spain) will be amended to “paralyze any hunting activity until further notice”. All this at the request of PACMA (Party of Animalists Against Animal Abuse).

Laura Duarte, spokesperson of the Spanish animalist party, argued that the regulation in question does not comply with the European directive “habitat fauna flora”, which applies to all species. Therefore, “if it is not consistent, this paralysis should continue”.

Here are the stunning and deserving podencos with Levriers du Sud hoping someone will have room in their home and heart for them.

  • Figures for galgos and podencos

This article recently appeared in the Daily Mail UK. However, I would disagree with the figure of 50,000, it is far more, as proven by the figures in this report which I presented to the PAES International Conference for Animal Welfare in 2016.

This is the report I presented to the PAES International Conference on Animal Welfare in Spain in 2016.

Let’s look at estimated ANNUAL figures for uncontrolled breeding of galgos and podencos.

    GALGOS

Back in the early 1990’s, a friend of mine who was a Daily Mail staff photographer, was visiting the Castile-la Mancha province. His guide walked him into an olive grove where Jim photographed the olive trees, most of which had a dead galgo hanging from them, which made headlines in the paper.

In 2009 SOS Galgos (Barcelona) claimed on their website that 160 galgos were abandoned every day.
That equates to 58,400 galgos every year, abandoned or dumped in perreras for killing, including reports of galgos hung in olive groves. With all the adverse publicity, the galgueros responded by abandoning their dogs and dumping them in perreras in greater numbers. There are now fewer instances of hangings because – however much the galgueros claim ‘there are no hangings’ – digital photos on the Internet accurately show dates and times and show the real truth. And because now one or two associations are not afraid of instigating court action against these dog-murdering men. And I’m talking about podencos being hung, as well as galgos.
