    Today FAUDA has to give bad news to the Canarian society. Today she has to report that she has been left alone before the animal abuse, before the abandonment and before the zero sacrifice. Today FAUDA does not see that there is any kind of help from the Administrations. In short, everything promised to date by the Public Administrations has not been fulfilled.
    Immersed in the month of August 2018, we are still waiting for the commitment of a new regulation of the Canary Islands Government for animal welfare, promised by said institution.

    We warn of a great indifference to a social emergency in which the abandonment is far exceeding what can support the protectors and associations. Even the island hostel can no longer handle the current situation.
    Given the extreme neglect of public administrations for the realization of an effective plan and the fulfillment of their promises, animal protection associations are forced to carry out only assistance measures, being overwhelmed by the social suffocation in which we find ourselves.

  • Primary, secondary, third line rescue – what’s best?

    I’ve taken this post from the fb page of Action for Animal Welfare Spain, which Viv has written. I am sure like me you admire everyone living in Spain with the problem of abandoned, injured, starving, maltreated animals surrounding them. How can they turn their backs on such an animal just because they have the legal limit for the number of dogs they can keep.

    ‘This post is not to cause offence, it’s for discussion.

    Primary rescue, Secondary rescue, Third line rescue, what’s best, what will make a difference? Perhaps a better title is, ‘less is more’, improving rescue, what do we need to do?

    The recent case in France of an English ex pat keeping rescue dogs and having some of them removed has produced a lot of controversy and differing opinions amongst rescuers.

  • Canine contraception – the choices

    A typical but sad story about dogs in Spain. Two galgas, abandoned in a small hamlet in Spain, near Cordoba. Retired British couple are feeding them, tick treatment etc, but can’t adopt. The shelters are full and they are concerned about the galgas coming into season and getting covered by roaming dogs and producing unwanted puppies. They can’t afford 150 euros each dog for spaying.

    So I found this article about Canine Contraception which I have forwarded on to them in the hope that they can stop the bitches coming into season until a shelter/association can take them.

  • Tip of the Needle – over vaccination of animals

    Here is another article on the subject of vaccines and how often our dogs etc should have them. My horse hasn’t had a vaccination for several years – he is retired – my dogs don’t go anywhere to meet other dogs as we have our own meadows to talk in. At least for them, rabies vaccination is now only every 3 years. But they are still pumped up with the rest of the drugs! As one is 15, one 13 and one 9, surely they are well protected without still needing an annual vaccine?

    Anyone else feel the same?

  • Norway to ban adoption of ‘street dogs’ from 1 July 2018

    Very tragic news for podencos, as many of them are adopted there, particularly through Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.

    The Norwegian Defra, Mattilsynet, just released a statement re import of dogs, what they call “street dogs”, defines as dogs from shelters/rescues, dogs without owners, dogs with unknown background.

    Main points:

    1. These dogs will no longer be legal to commercially import.
    2. As a private person, you must be able to document that the dog have been owned by you, and lived with you, for minimum 6 months before entering Norway.

    Bascially, this means it is no longer possible to adopt/import a rescue dog from over seas effective from the 1st July 2018
