What about a Podenco in your home?
On my blog you can find lots of information about podencos and the different types. They range from the small Maneto and Erbano to the big Campanero. There are even some types which are particular to a particular area, like the Podenco Paternina from the Huelva province of Spain.
There’s a wealth of information on podencos on my blog, you can put your question in the ‘Search’ box, but here’s a recent article which I thought was interesting.

Gran Canaria – life of hell for podencos
From Gran Canaria. Heartbreaking.‘I come from the summit and found an abandoned dog. At first she was very suspicious but we put her to eat and slowly it came closer. There has been no way to catch it. We left her food and water but I don’t think he’ll last long
Updated – the person who passed me the notice tried to rescue her with volunteers from a protector, and yet more volunteers.
They put water and food out but impossible to catch it…. the podencos are very scared.
We were organizing to get cheat cage and as she went up today to bring him food and just told me to stop rescue because her owner showed up. He told me because it was sick!
I guess yes owner will be a hunter because he told me the area was full.Gran Canaria’
Heartless hunter to leave a dog to die like that, not even help catch it!

The Journey – when you bring a pet into your life
“The Journey” by Crystal Ward KentWhen you bring a pet into your life, you begin a journey – a journey that will bring you more love and devotion than you have ever known, yet also test your strength and courage.
If you allow, the journey will teach you many things, about life, about yourself, and most of all, about love. You will come away changed forever, for one soul cannot touch another without leaving its mark.
Along the way, you will learn much about savoring life’s simple pleasures;
jumping in leaves, snoozing in the sun, the joys of puddles, and even the satisfaction of a good scratch behind the ears. -
Podlets – help Podencos In Need Scotland find forever homes for them
‘We really need to find forever homes for these amazing Podenco Andaluz puppies’Podencos are lively dogs and that’s why they’ll very soon have to move out of the Puppy House. The walls aren’t high.
Podencos are climbers and they’re also jumpers so it’s just a matter of time before they’ll be over the wall and wreaking havoc in the garden. They’re cheeky lovable scallywags and while they’re still in the Puppy House, their little characters shine through but once they’re in the big kennels they’re vieing for attention with dozens of other dogs and become in danger of being another “anonymous” dog.
Pepe, Pablo and Pancho are now 6 months old. I do hope there’s a chance for them. Contact me. Mary-Ann Dunning, volunteer at Paradise Kennels – paradisekennels@live.com

Poignant thoughts from a Vet on euthanasia
This is a story from a vet in South Africa. Not about galgos but but probably there are many more vets around the world and in Spain who feel the same as her, putting down healthy galgos in perreras.
‘I have been writing this post in my head for nearly 3 years and until today I’ve never been brave enough to post it. But recently some people doing similar work and facing much the same reality have used social media to speak up about a topic that for so long has not been discussed. Their bravery has given me the courage to finally share my thoughts and experiences about something that I’ve needed to for so long.
Today I euthanased 5 dogs. This is not an uncommon task for a vet to perform and getting into the profession you are well aware of the fact that this is something you will have to do in your chosen career. However, the dogs I put down today were not sick, they were not injured, they were not old and they were not unhealthy in any way. They were not untamed and they were not aggressive. They were perfect, healthy and normal dogs. There was no reason for them to lose their lives today other than that they were failed by humans because of the current overpopulation crisis of domestic animals particularly dogs that so few people are prepared to accept and try to understand.

Podenco Flynn – from Podenco Friends to a forever home in Canada
From Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.‘A post Ive waited some years to be able to write.
Flynn has been here at the finca a number of years, a special needs Podenco he has been passed over so many times and he just needed that family who would understand him ..
Well the good news is, Flynn has a family waiting for him in Canada!!! A family with many years experience of shy timid dogs that need the support time and patience to learn about a different world, outside the safety of the finca.
I am so happy for him, he arrived so shut down and broken and at first the only person he would allow close to him was me. But over time he has discovered that people are nice and in many ways he is a very happy fun loving dog but he does get worried in situations he is not comfortable with. He will have people that will help him overcome his fears of the unknown to live his life to the full.
