  • Protectora Scooby – costs of running a shelter

    Scooby shelter from above 400
From Fermin – Scooby Shelter Running Costs: Veterinary

We have a number of running costs to keep the Scooby shelter perational and thought it would be worth focussing on different
internal cost groups to demonstrate how much we rely on your donations and how we spend the money you give us. In this
newsletter we highlight our veterinary costs.

We are fortunate to have our onsite clinic and our own vets. Our vets are salaried and we can present them with most of the medical conditions we come across as well as all of our spays and castrations. Sometimes we have to refer veterinary work to specialists or off-site vets but generally we rely on the skill of our Scooby vets.

  • Protectora Scooby – summer newsletter – A Bad Law

    A Bad Law

We continue to operate our rescue in the context of the very bad legislative amendment enacted in 2023. A new and very ambitious update to the animal welfare law in Spain was passed in January 2022. The law itself includes training for dog owners, penalties for animal cruelty, prohibition of puppy farming and sales of pets in pet shops. All of this is totally laudable and
necessary. However, the PSOE Party (Spanish Socialist Workers), the senior partner in the coalition government, subsequently proposed an amendment to the law to exclude hunting, working and guarding dogs. The amendment was approved in 2023. Commentators say the PSOE initiated the amendment fearing reactions from rural voters.

  • How to calm a nervous dog

I’ve recently been reading a few posts on a facebook page by people who have adopted podencos, and seem surprised that after a month or so the dog is still nervous. It saddens me because it would seem they expect far too much too soon from a dog which has probably lived most of its life in a shed on a chain in the hands of a Spanish galguero. It’s now been in a shelter, then on a transport and into a home environment where people speak a different language. Instead of leaving the dog alone to adjust to all these changes, they insist on invading its space to pat it, stroke it…

Those of us experienced in homing a nervous dog know it can take months before the dog settles – it took my galga Carmela over 2 years before she finally became a ‘normal’ dog. It is nearly 3 years since I adopted Rosely, who spent the first 6 or 7 years with a Spanish hunter and she is still very nervous of my husband, strangers and sudden noises. I don’t think she will improve any more.

Here’s a weblink to an article on calming a nervous dog.

  • Foster a Podenco for Hope for Podencos

If you can’t afford to adopt but have room for a podenco in your home, why not consider fostering.

Hope for Podencos have some which are available for foster till they find their forever homes.

    ‘We need your help!

On our recent trip to Spain, we forged a partnership with the wonderful SOS Animales Salobrena and have taken a number of podencos in their care under our wing as HFP dogs. Sadly, our new partners have been met with several sets of tragic circumstances including the death of one of their founders, a situation very close to our own hearts, and need to drastically reduce the number of dogs in their care in order to be able to continue their fight.

  • Deadly disease hitting rehala dogs in Spain

Rehala dogs are usually podencos which are hired out to hunters.

Castile-La Mancha warns hunters about Aujezzky’s disease affecting dogs.

The Council for Sustainable Development of #CastillaLaMancha has warned people with hunting license in the autonomous community about the #Aujezzky’s disease that can affect #huntingdogs and #rehalas

It takes between two and six days to incubate and the symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea, inapetence, difficulty breathing, nervousness, itching and compulsive scratching, howling, behavioral changes or neurological changes, among others. Death usually occurs within 24 hours from the time of symptoms being detected.

  • Protectora Scooby – summer newsletter – the Scooby Van

    Scooby logo 400
The Scooby summer newsletter is 12 pages long. Sadly they don’t have anyone to put it on the Internet available for me to link you to it. So over the next few weeks I’ll be posting parts of the newsletter here. The first part – there are 9! – is about the Scooby van which suffered front end damage. No photos to post as I can’t save them from the pdf file.

    ‘ The Scooby Van

Our van is back on its wheels! For that we are very grateful to a grant-funding body we contacted to help us make up the shortfall left by the insurance claim. Even though we were not at fault in the accident, the insurance policy paid only part of the cost of the repair.

And it was a big one! In addition to the damaged wing, we needed a new chassis. Our supportive mechanic and owner of our local Iveco garage restored the van to full working order within the most costeffective budget he possibly could.

  • Spanish hunter shoots himself!

A hunter dies after accidentally shooting himself during a hunting trip between Guadix and Baza

The incident apparently occurred after a stumble and in the presence of a minor son who was accompanying him.

A 38-year-old hunter died last Thursday from an accidental shot from his gun, which hit him in the side, during a day of pigeon hunting in a spot near the border of the municipalities of Guadix and Baza.

Sources consulted by Europa Press at the 112 Andalucía Emergency Coordination Centre have indicated that it was at 10:25 a.m. this past Thursday when a warning was issued that the hunter had accidentally shot himself in the vicinity of a restaurant in the Los Balcones area, specifically to the left of the GR-7100 road in the direction of Bácor (Guadix).
