  • Accommodation on Tenerife urgently needed

Tenerife Refugio la esperanza marisa 250As regular readers know, I remind people about the podencos on the Canary Islands who have a terrible life with the hunters and whose main chance of a forever home is on mainland Europe. Here’s a heartbreaking story about a shelter on Tenerife. Please help if you can.

Marisa Traen’s refuge (Refugio de la Esperanza del Sur) with her many Podencos has to move!

The new piece of land has been found, but is not ready yet to receive the many animals!! And now the council of Adeje announced a few days ago, that the property where they still are, has to be cleared before the 8th December!! (supposedly for promoting the place with hotels) and that the 89 dogs will be put to sleep if they are still there on that date!

  • Montserrat, Valencia – 8 months old with a neck wound

Monserrat podenquita sun 190ISIS is a podenquita that appeared abandoned in Montserrat. She had a wound on the neck as if she had been chained up all the time. She is about 8 months, honey-colored eyes, is very sweet and affectionate and gets along well with other dogs. The wound has healed with treatment each day and now she needs a family who will offer her a forever home. At such a young age, she has many years ahead of her; young enough to train, maybe even make an agility dog. She is in Valencia.

She will have a contract, commitment of sterilization and follow-up

  • The story of Clare – The Crazy Dog Lady!

Clare Roberts Me & Alma dog show 250Many of you kindly donated to Clare to help her pay for the surgery needed for Podenco Angel, badly injured in a road accident. Sadly he gave up his fight for life in the morning of 5th November, with Clare’s loving arms around him. Here Clare tells the story of the other canines in her life.

‘I have 33 dogs. Should I repeat that? Yes, 33 dogs! Don’t ask me how it happened, it just did!! It wasn’t a choice, it wasn’t planned, it just ‘is’.

I split up with my partner back in December 2011, and moved into a log cabin with my little Spanish mish-mash butterfly dog, Mama, and my large Siberian Husky, Blue. A nice little family group, don’t you think?! Then I had the bright idea of adopting a large dog for security, as I had loads of garden and a decent sized house, so no problem with space and I would feel more secure.

  • Hind leg dew claws – what to do about them

Bev Ray socks 250One of the podencos recently rescued from Valencia perrera is Ray, a rough-haired boy who is now in foster with Bev Farmer. He was recently castrated and, at the same time, his rear dew claws removed.

I’ve lived with all types of dogs all my life and been in involved in the rescue of a few hundred, especially from Spain, and I’ve not come across a dog with rear dew claws. So I asked Bev about it and also found this information on the Internet.

  • Perrera to forever home – it’s a long and expensive journey for every dog

Perrera to forever home – it’s a long and expensive journey for every dog
The situation in Spain for the galgos and podencos remains desperate. Every day I receive appeals for help to get dogs out of perreras or abandoned and living on the streets. It seems to me that the galgueros are hanging fewer dogs and simply dumping them and expecting the refuges and rescue associations to take them in. They continue to dump their dogs at the gates of refuges too – tied up overnight for the volunteers to find the following day.

  • RIP Angel

    Message from Clare 5/11/2013

I’m very sorry to have to tell you all that Angel passed away in my arms at 9:55 am this morning, without the use of any injection. He was not suffering, but there was no way he could come back from the damage done from the original accident and subsequent operations.
I’m so sad that I never got to know the ‘real’ Angel, running like the wind, enjoying life, pain free and happy. I know he would have been wonderful to see.
Thank you all so much for your help and support through this tragedy. He knew he was loved by so many. So many tears for you.

Run free my beautiful, beautiful Angel, may you have wings at your feet and love in your heart always. I love you ♥
