  • Podenco Spirit – keep fingers crossed for his recovery

Refugio la Candela Spirit 400 29 12 2016Remember Spirit, the poor podenco who had his lower jaw shot off. Refugio la Candela reported on 29 December.

WE ARE WORRIED ABOUT SPIRIT – he is not quite right : (

Since some days ago, the professionals in Valencia Sur Veterinary Hospital have noticed that he had lost a little appetite and decided to look for the cause.

SPIRIT’s situation is very delicate; although his improvements are obvious, his body has suffered a lot and any uncontrolled process can mean big risks.

After several control tests we could appreciate a hepatic alteration that might respond to a vascular hepatitis; we are going to do a cytology to be able to establish a clearer diagnosis.

Besides, yesterday (28/12/2016) he underwent an ultrasound scan that showed a regular size of his organs.

  • To the Mayor of Cordoba – sign the petition

Policia Proteccion Animal 400 1 2017A petition with a difference. This one will be sent to the Mayor of Cordoba, Spain. Here is a translation.

‘An institution dedicated exclusively to the protection of animals and the respect of animal protection laws is necessary in every city where there are protectionist groups. The animal police must be equipped with veterinary medicine vehicles, a place to recover animals in situations of neglect and abuse, where they have the power to fine and punish the aggressors anywhere.

We must control cases of abuse and abandonment of animals, and appropriate people who love animals and know all the legislation that exists on the subject. These people should be prepared to deal with animal emergencies, shelter transfers and police power to arrest people accused of ill-treatment and murder of animals.

Mr. Governor of the province of Cordoba, please do something to stop such abuses, murder and abandonment of animals.

Please sign and share this petition widely.

  • Strangled with a metal wire – beating the bastard cazadores!

Jan neck wire 1 400 4 1 2017Here sadly is an example that podencos suffer the same fate as galgos. This is Jan, luckily now safe with Val’s Podenco Rescue in Spain. She was strangled with a wire embedded in her neck. She will hopefully recover but needs to stay at the clinic for at least another week. She is only 1 year old.

Anne Buttenhoff says. ‘Next week our vet will see her again. He has experience in these kinds of severe injuries. She has a strong will to live and we are with her all the way. We need to ask for your help for her treatment. If you can help all is very much appreciated. PayPal is valspodencorescue@hotmail.com, mark it family and friends so there is no charge on the donation. • A wish for all dogs

Pawprint heart outline 400This delightful poem was published in YOURS magazine in Poetry Corner.

    Friends for life
    by Andrea Hazeldine

I wish you many lazy days
    Just lying in the sun
I wish you lots of special times
    And always lots of fun.

I hope when you are tired
    You have your favourite rug
And when you or I are lying down
    We’ll always share a hug.

  • Volunteering at a rescue shelter – ground rules to remember!

ACTIN galga Aysha 400It will soon be the end of 2016 and thoughts will turn to holidays in 2017. Regular readers will know I suggest that volunteering at an animal refuge is a wonderful way to spend a week – but there are some ground rules which need to be born in mind. It’s not actually a holiday as such – cleaning kennels, feeding dogs, washing bedding…but there is always time off to do sightseeing, or just play with the dogs!

Most volunteers know this; many return year on year to their preferred refuge whilst others like to go to a different area and meet different people. But the ground rules remain the same!

    1. Remember that the people who own/run the refuge are the ones there 24/7 365 days a year and know the dogs in their care inside out. They know their characters, likes and dislikes, which dogs get on with others, or not.

    2. Do not question any instructions relating to the care of the dogs – helpful suggestions will be considered.

    3. Dogs like routine, refuges run on routine, so please adhere to the daily routine of the refuge wherever possible – obviously if bad weather hits and it’s all hands on deck, then carry out the emergency tasks asked of you.
