  • RIP PJ

    Bev PJ last pic 400 21 6 2019
    From Bev Farmer 21/6/2019

‘I took this photo of PJ at 12.30 pm yesterday thinking how well he looked and never thought that exactly 24 hours later I would have him wrapped in my arms and saying good bye.

PJ gained his wings earlier today… last night he became very ill, was disorientated and blind. This morning he seemed a little brighter and was at our vets first thing. Blood results confirmed his body was shutting down and although his spirit was strong he was so frail and I looked into his eyes and could see he was tired. After a lengthy discussion with my vets although I didn’t want to say the words it was time to let him pass peacefully.

  • Update on Carley & PJ

    Bev Carley and PJ 400 18 6 2019
Latest news from Bev Farmer on podenca Carley and galgo pup PJ who were rescued together.

‘Today we got the final results for Carley and PJ and its been a lot to process.

First Carley…the tumours removed in her recent surgery are malignant and a high grade. She needs to go back for a second surgery to remove the rest of the mammary tract and hopefully sufficient tissue to get clear margins. She had bounced back so well from her previous surgery and now she needs to go through another one. At the moment we don’t know if she will need further treatment i.e chemo, we will need to send tissue samples to the lab for analysis.

  • Black podencos – do you have one?

    Valentin Ramiro 400 6 2019
Some years ago I wrote about an Argentinian who bred Podenco Andaluz…I haven’t managed to find the post here to link to it. But I recently received an email from a lady who adopted a dog in Argentina which is very much a black podenco type. So Valentin would like to introduce you to Raimondo and if any of you have a black podenco, maybe you would like to message her in the comments.

‘The story of how I got Raimundo is very standard: I saw a puppy at a vet store and asked the owner where he got it, who then directed me to this place where an old couple lived. There was the mother with two puppies left, one of them was Raimundo. The mother didn’t look like Raimundo at all except for the color: she was a very common looking dog, black, medium size, chubby, like a small lab. She didn’t have Raimundo’s ears or his slenderness. She got pregnant one time she ran away (or so her owners claimed) and they never saw the male dog that fathered Raimundo. Also, Raimundo was originally the name of the owner of the doggies, a man in his old age. I thought the name was hilarious and so I kept it for my Rai.

I love my Rai, he is such a crazy but loving dog, and he is gorgeous. Every single week someone stops me in the street to tell me how peculiar, or elegant, or Egyptian, or cute he is.

  • Hope for Podencos – 13 handed over from a hunter

News and video from Hope for Podencos who received 13 dogs from a single hunter at the end of May. Each podenco has to be blood tested, neutered, vaccinated, wormed and passported. This costs us crucial funds; and it is only with your support we can do this.

  • 4 Lanzarote podencos now safe in Murcia with Podenco Friends

At the beginning of June these 4 podencos arrived at the finca of Podenco Friends and Bev Farmer. Here she tells the story.

‘The Podencos of Lanzarote .. they spend much of their lives locked away in dark buildings or caves dug in the ground usually chained to wall. Maybe their owner will visit them a couple of times a week once no longer wanted they is little chance they will be adopted.. A chance exchange of messages a few years ago with Laura Johnson on the island and now we have been able help so many with the support of some amazing people..

This is the first time these four podencos have had the opportunity to run free in a big space and just enjoy the freedom. Rescue work is tough and demanding but to sit ad watch Paprika, Zia, Shani and Mistral experience a different life is joy to experience and makes all the difficult times worth while

  • Change of law for animals in Andalucia from May 2019

RAIA form change of law 400 5 2019
Just been advised of this by Ann Marie Payne of Ann’s Canine Care. Email her on this link if you want a copy of the form in pdf.

    CHANGE OF LAW. PLEASE READ

From 13th May 2019 the procedure to change ownership of a dog that is registered on raia ( Andalusia) has changed. Also if you want to register a dog on raia from another database.

Now you must obtain one of these forms and have the previous owner fill it out and then have your vet present it to raia, along with proof of identity of the owner. Your local vet will have access to one of these forms.

Also if you rescue a dog from the street without a chip you must register it at the local town hall. This will not effect your right to keep the dog.

These are new laws so please, don’t expect Ann to be able to answer any questions. The best person to ask is your local vet.

  • Podencas Nancy & Poppy – happy in their forever home

    Cliff podencos 7
I always love to get stories about rescued podencos who have found their forever home. Here’s a lovely one from Cliff who has adopted two of these fabulous hounds.

‘It all began around the spring of 2017, I had spent the past seven years refurbishing my home and creating a garden from almost nothing. Then following the death of my mother I had become very insular and unsocial, burying myself in the work and not going out very much.

Basically I was a grumpy, sad, lonely old fart. I was divorced from my second wife and alienated from my two children. I had no one close to love except my brother and sister-in-law who live just three miles away and I only wanted to see them on special occasions.

  • Update on Podenca Carley with Podenco Friends

    Bev Carley op 400 7 6 2019
    Latest news from Bev Farmer

‘Carley is in surgery … they have removed one side of the mammary chain and part on the other side .. Also she has been spayed and the tumors to be sent for analysis.. this is a big invasive surgery and
very painful for the females so will take a few days for her to recover.’

My first foster Podenca Jasmine has a tumour the size of a tennis ball removed and spayed at the same time; she made a wonderful recovery. The Spanish vets are wonderful.
