  • Galgos 112 – injured podenco Lagun – update

Here’s an update on the progress and treatment of Lagun, the badly injured podenco left on the roadside.

‘Lagun, still in critical condition, came very low in temperature and dehydrated, has been traced back and tested, and we are told that he has eaten a little bit of canita.

If his condition allows he will get more tests as he seems to have broken his hip, apart from arriving with wounds full of worms. (goodness knows how long he’s been laying there).

Thanks to the Aimar Clinic team for taking such care of him.

    If you can help Lagun:

  • A hard time

    RIP Pawprints poem 400
Apologies for the lack of news recently. After losing my 8 year old galgo Polar in April to lymphoma, we then lost 13 year old galgo Bracken at the end of July with a tumour on his lungs which was bleeding, and finally on 7th August I said farewell to my 18 year old little Podenca Andaluz Bebe. She had never lived without at least one canine housemate – over the years she supervised the permanent residents plus several fosters. Although she had the start of dementia, losing her sight and hearing, after losing both galgos she gave up on life. So we have lost our last 3 Spanish dogs in 5 months. It’s only in April 2020 we said goodbye to Carmela. It has been a great shock and we are bereft, having lived with dogs all our lives.

We are taking time out to grieve, hence the lack of posts for the last few days. We will foster/adopt again but for the time being we are using the time to visit family and friends around the UK which we haven’t seen for a few years.

Pictured below are Bebe, Bracken, Polar and the bottom photo also includes Carmela and French lurcher Floyd who we lost in 2019.

RIP to our beloved Spanish hounds. You took away pieces of our heart but you will live in our memories for ever.

  • Galgos 112 – saving a Podenco injured and left in the road!

    From Galgos 112

‘We got an email asking for desperate help for this poor podenco. Found by some guys who are sightseeing in the county area, in Jaén. He was lying in the middle of the road.

They stopped to pick him up and, not knowing anyone in the area, they called SEPRONA, they told them they would go but they didn’t show up, then they went to the local police in Castellar and they did not receive help either. Fearing that he would end up in the kennel despite his condition, after much prayers, they have managed to get police to contact them ′′ someone who cares about helping animals “. Here’s how they have been able to get to the store where works Silvia, who is the person who has written to us.
That’s how it is, the poor dog wasn’t in a position to go back and forth, but nobody except Silvia and these guys has lifted a finger for him!

Gentlemen of the Seprona and Local Police, we remind you that you are to enforce the animal welfare law, some do not show up, others pass without even looking at whether you have chip and be able to warn your owner. Animals are living beings who feel and suffer and this podenco unfortunately has suffered a lot without you lifting a finger!

  • Farewell to Podenca Bebe – the last one standing

    Bebe 5th in Best Rescue 400 7 2019
After losing my galgo Polar in April, galgo Bracken a just over a week ago, I had to take little Bebe to the vet on Saturday…her body just gave up on her. She was the last of my Spanish rescue hounds…but she had a good life with us.

Bebe, 7.5kg Podenca Andaluz, was injured on a Seville road back in 2008. Early days for my Podenco Post blog but a young Spanish volunteer with Refuge Sofia Escuela, Marisa, contacted me to publicise for a foster home for Bebe to convalesce after operation. She had named the Podenca Bebe. My daughter’s name is Marisa and my nickname at school was Bebe, so of course the little Podenca had to come to me! Booked into my excellent French vet to repair her injury, from the state of her teeth Florence assessed her age as between 4-6 – her teeth were not in a good condition.

  • Calling Podenco People in the Dover (UK) area

    New pod in Dover 400 7 2021
    From Polly Mathewson.

    Dear Podenco People!

Are there any pod families in the Dover area of Kent, UK?

Writing on behalf of this sweet newly adopted handsome fellow and his loving Mum who has recently moved to Dover and who would be glad to meet some fellow pod families to share tips and trips…maybe a regular joint walk. This little hound is very easy at home, good with people and other dogs and even on public transport, but has a high prey drive, so it would help his Mum to gain confidence to get out and about more if they had some partners in crime! And it would be more fun.

    The more pods the merrier!

There are quite a lot of us poddie people up here on the north Kent coast, but are there any down south? Or are you in Dover and part of a really friendly dog (not specifically pod) meet up group? Or on your own with a dog and would love a walking mate.

  • Update on Podencos Camilo & Eloy in their forever home in Germany

    Camilo and Eloy 400 7 2021
    From Polly Mathewson.

Dear Friends of our CAMILO & ELOY podenco brothers, now proudly going by their new adoptive names MIGUEL & MIGAS, it is incredible to see the strides the boys are taking now on only DAY 3 of their new lives in Germany with their loving forever Mums Regina and Monika and their sweet pod siblings Whoopie and Muffin.

The video of the boys tentatively creeping out of the cosy igloo to explore is from this SUNDAY NIGHT, just hours after they arrived from their long journey from southern Spain to northern Germany! Amazing. And their other video eating side by side. How proud we are of our shy little loves and how grateful we are to their new family, the KeksBande (The Biscuit Gang) for helping Migas-Eloy and Miguelito-Cami to feel this secure and so comfy already.

  • Podencos Camilo and Eloy – en route for their forever home.

    Camilo and Eloy 400 7 2021
From Polly Mathewson, who has been helping these 2 brothers for many years.

‘CAMILO & ELOY are heading home today (23/7/2021) and feel so HAPPY! You can turn up the volume to hear them joyfully whistling!

They also have a very long list of friends who they want to thank.

After the tragedy of spending all of their eight years of life so far “In Kennels & In-Visible” our shy beautiful Spaniards, podenco brothers, ELOY & CAMILO, set off today Friday 23 July to arrive on Saturday 24 July with their wonderful forever family in Germany, Mums Regina Schnelle & Monika Habner and poddie siblings Whoopie and Muffin. This is a dream come true for our two.

The boys have endured so many frightened, lonely and sad years, but this last year has been an increasingly good one since we could move them to Costapet kennels near Malaga for rehabilitation. It’s been a year in which they have found increasing confidence and more friends, canine and human, than they could have imagined. Their extended family has become enormous!
Our boys are grateful beyond words or woofs, for all the love they have received from everyone – as am I – one of their 3 temporary Mums and writing this on their behalf.
