  • 2 Podenco Campaneros rescued from a hellhole – update and another one saved

    La Bienvenida 2 pods 250 15 6 2016Update 15/6/16

    Google translation.

The first thing to give back to the whole world, thank you for your support, your affection, and the interest that you guys are showing by our little fighters. No doubt that we send all of your strength and good energy, we will never tire of saying thank you with all my heart.

Also, we ask you a little bit of patience, we know that you’re eager to know every minute on them and their evolution, we all want to recover as soon as possible, but this recovery will be slow and needed a lot of time, care and affection, and we are only a few Volunteers, so if a lot of times we can’t give you that information, or publish update do not doubt that it is because we are doing other thousands of things to help them, to them and the other 200 animals to the shelter and that we also need us.

  • Protectora La Bienvenida, Ciudad Real – Podenco Campaneros in rescue

I first visited La Bienvenida refuge, Cuidad Real (200km south of Madrid) in July 2007 with the French association L’Europe des Levriers. We collected 4 galgos from there to bring back to France and forever homes. One of them was Karmel who I adopted and shortly after I created my blog Galgo News to publicise the plight of the galgos and podencos.

This is the story of 2 Podenco Campaneros (the large white woolly podencos used to hunt boar and deer) which La Bienvenida have rescued.

This is the story, photos are on their website – warning, very distressing.

If you can help with the costs of the enormous vet fees which will be incurred to help these 2 hounds recover, details are below.

  • Podencos Tigra and Lola – packing their bags for the UK

Super sighthound Lola 170(Lola) In just two short weeks Tigra and Lola will be packing their bags for the Uk!

Will you help us raise the money for their boosters and transport?

With so many dogs at the finca our funds have taken quite the beating 🙁 we care for 10 dogs just at the finca costing us €2.50/day/dog! It’s a great price, but it really adds up! And on top are bills, flea and worming!

Please help and donate a few pounds for our hounds!

  • Saving the Gran Canaria podencos – how you can help

Fore many years now I have been publicising the plight of the podencos in the Canary Islands – Lanzarote, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, El Hierro – their main hope of life forever is on mainland Europe and across the Atlantic. The new group Saving the Gran Canaria podencos is doing sterling work, Suzanne Stacey is a vet in the UK who has taken this problem to heart and is already doing sterling work.

Here are some of the stunning podencos in the perrera, most of them will be killed – such an unnecessary waste of life, of beautiful dogs which will make wonderful companion hounds.

  • Podenco Puppy in terrible state – now safe and recovering

Ragamuffin podenco puppy mange 250 1 6 2016Here’s the story of this poor podenco puppy, told by Harriet Adie.

    Hello dear people.

Please let me introduce you all to Ragga Muffin. He is only 4 months old. Found in this state on 1st June 2016.

He has no hair but I can see it would have been a lovely tan colour with white patches.

His skin is hot, red and caked in scabs, blood and dry flakes. Not to mention ticks and fleas.

His fore feet and legs are terribly swollen and very sore for him to walk on, with his nail beds bleeding and seeping in places.

  • A blind podenco hoping for that special forever home

Axarquia Pancho blind podenco 170 6 2016I met some of the lovely Axarquia volunteers at the PAES conference last October. Here is an appeal for a special podenco in their care. Dawn McClelland writes.

Is there anyone out there that can help us to find some contacts to rehome an adorable blind Podenco called Pancho – this lad is blind from birth, managed on the streets for a while and then came into our care. Pancho does not let his disability limit him at all – after 10 minutes he can navigate a new place perfectly. He is utterly gorgeous, loving and a credit to his breed – can anyone help please? Click on the AAR link below to see him.

THis is Pancho’s story – AAR NEED YOUR HELP to find that perfect home for him

  • Podenco Canarios Romeo and Valentino – from perrera to forever homes

Patricia Herrera 2 250I’ve always advertised the Canary Islands podenco rescue associations as they desperately need help to rehome these fabulous hounds. Here’s a lovely story about two of them rehomed with Patricia Herrera and her husband.

‘After finding out just how easy it was to adopt a podenco from Gran Canaria through the Saving the Gran Canaria Podencos page, thanks to the amazing help of a certain wonderful someone … I decided that one podenco is never enough and decided to get a pod pal for Valentino, who at 1 needed a playmate as my other dogs are 11, 12 and maybe 16 years old!

As you can see it was a rip roaring success and Romeo and Valentino adore each other and coming from the perrera were both very well socialised and surprisingly also house trained despite their harsh upbringing.
Podencos are such beautiful, gentle and sensitive dogs they can find pound life unbearably stressful and often give up eating and lose the will to live and are so terribly grateful for being saved and shown the love they have longed for all their lives so adopting or fostering is incredibly rewarding.

Anpana Alan 250 6 2014 (Alan with galga Alana) A word of warning from Jane Brian of Pepis Dog Refuge.

‘Just to let you know what happened to some of our dogs a few years ago now, we rescued 5 mastin puppies and they were in a large pen with a shelter. They were all doing fine until one day we noticed they were looking poorly one was very sick, they were rushed to the vets and put on a drip.
