  • Alone and unwanted in Toledo

    So sad, the lot of many failed hunting podencos.

    ‘Hello! This two-year-old dog is another hunting victim. Not good for hunting because she’s scared of shots. Therefore, she is doomed to spend the rest of her life isolated and alone in this room, it is the only thing she will see in her life if we do not find a better place. Please if anyone can find her a better home, a foster or a family that wants to give her a chance don’t hesitate to write to me. It’s in a town in Toledo, but could travel. She has all the vaccines up to date and no donation is asked for it. She’s very sweet and good, she deserves a chance.’

  • Molly The Pet Detective

    I want to share with you an amazing book I am currently reading. ‘Molly The Pet Detective’ by Colin Butcher is the story of a working cocker spaniel rescue dog which has been trained to find missing cats!

    Colin Butcher is a retired UK policeman who chose a project to see if a dog could be trained to find missing cats. It’s the story of how he researched the idea, the help he got from Medical Detection Dogs both in finding the right dog and training both her and himself.

    The book also tells the stories of missing cats Molly found, as well as missing dogs, the latter sadly a growing problem in the UK.

  • Aggression in dogs – what are the causes?

    Our galgo Bracken has been with us for 11 years; he has always been a sensitive dog, happy in the pack of hounds and walking the meadows every day…on leash, as he has a hunter’s nose! However, since we sold the farm in January 2021 and downsized back to the UK, he has caused us concern by showing aggression to other dogs.

  • Podenco Theo now safe at Podenco Friends

    This is the second of the 3 podencos which arrived with Bev Farmer, Theo came with Carmela.

    Theo .. new arrival.

    He is one of the three that arrived on Monday a smaller Podenco only 9 kilos already very much settled in.

    On his visit to vets for bloods etc Bruno also does a thorough check of him. Then the words he has luxation of the patella but not one both of them. So it looks like Theo will be with us for a few months he needs surgery on both knees and then rehab. At the moment he is racing around but left will cause him problems in the future.

    Not what we expected but thank goodness my vets are on the ball .. It’s been a challenging week all 4 of the new arrivals need additional veterinary care .. Will be keeping me busy the next few weeks

  • Podenca Carmela with Podenco Friends

    ‘New arrival ..Carmela. Earlier this week 3 Podencos arrived at the Finca. Working together with Michael Owens of SHUG they came from another rescue.

    Carmela is 10 years old … we have her original passport, a senior Podenco abandoned after many years of loyal service and giving birth to many puppies.

    You could not wish to meet a more gracious and sweet natured dog. Loving, gentle, kind are just a few words that describe her. She has recently gone through a major surgery and has some health issues we need to address but she is very bright and happy and greets you with a waggy tail.

    For now she is comfortable and settled, she is booked in to see our vet. Will update once we have more information.’

  • Galgos Rescue Almeria – update on China and Volcan

    ‘If animals could speak they could tell what happened.

    China’s muzzle is hurt and both seem to have been kicked because they are limping a bit. We’re so grateful that the FB post of China’s & Volcan’s disappearance was shared so many times. Normally Pods are very active but they are very quiet now, probably both are still affected by what happened. Fortunately their tails still wag when we talk to them, it means they haven’t lost their trust in us. Now they need to go to the vet for a checkup.

  • Dementia in dogs

    We’re lucky that over the decades most of our dogs have lived to their teens. One or two have left us due to health deterioration like cancer, but others have suffered with dementia. Mostly ours have got to the stage of losing their bearings, or staring at something vacantly, plus loss of bowel function too. My galga Carmela suffered a stroke from which she recovered 90% but my little podenca Bebe is now 18 years old and showing familiar symptoms. So far it’s not too advanced that she needs more than medication for thyroid problems, but I expect over the year her brain will let her down more.

    I feel very sad seeing old dogs which have been dumped by hunters or owners who aren’t prepared to repay their dog’s loyalty with care in their twilight years.

    For 4 years GRA try to make a difference in the life of street, abandoned, abused…dogs. Yesterday, every Rescue’s worst nightmare became reality: burglary and dogs stolen.

    Our 2 newcomers, the beautiful Podencos China and Volcan were stolen from their kennel. Wednesday evening they were picked up from the people who had found them and today we had an appointment for a general check up, microchip and vaccinations.
    A wonderful new future awaited them, what “future” awaits them now? A life of hunger, thirst, fear, abuse and deprivation …
    We are speechless, bewildered, despondent and angry.

    Angry about the impunity that reigns here when it comes to criminal acts against animals.

    Please share as much as possible! We desperately hope to find China and Volcan back.

    For those who took them, please bring them back.
